Generalisation à Examples


Have a look at a related worksheet.

Take each of the following generalisations and make a list of three or four examples to prove the point. Then write out the generalisation and the supporting examples as a paragraph. (An example has been done for you.)

  1. The United World College of South-East Asia encourages students to care about and help less fortunate people. For example, the college has a Global Concerns programme that raises funds for welfare and environmental projects in developing countries. Students also learn about development issues in Humanities lessons. Finally, the college has a large social service programme in which students work alongside elderly, handicapped or sick people from the local community.
  2. The United World College of South-East Asia has excellent facilities.
  3. The United World College of South-East Asia takes sport very seriously.
  4. The United World College of South-East Asia encourages students to learn about and respect other countries and cultures.

Choose one of the following topics and think of a generalisation you could make about it. Then make a list of examples to prove the point. Finally, use your generalisation and examples to write a short essay.

NB: You will need to expand your examples i.e. add more details to them or explain them. Here is an example:

The United World College of South-East Asia encourages students to care about and help less fortunate people. For example, the college has a Global Concerns programme that raises funds for welfare and environmental projects in developing countries. In addition to fundraising, students also spread information about the projects by means of poster displays, newsletters and presentations at assemblies. Some students even get the chance to visit a project.
